SUBARU BOXER technologies:
powering pleasure to new highs.

Building on the inherent advantages of the Horizontally-Opposed SUBARU BOXER's low mounting and enhanced driving stability, these high-quality engines are matched to the Outback to encourage your spirit of adventure. The 6-cylinder engine has the innovative new SI-DRIVE (SUBARU Intelligent Drive)* to combine fluid, silky driving pleasure and economy. Both 2.5 and 3.0-litre powerplants are also smooth, with minimal vibration, giving turbine-like rev build-up and a wide power band throughout.
*Standard on the 3.0R models

SUBARU BOXER 3.0-litre DOHC engine

Compact and lightweight, despite its 6 cylinders, this perfectly balanced, low-mounted engine delivers 180 kW (245 PS). The direct, variable valve-lifting system coupled with the Active Valve Control System (variable valve timing system) lets revs rise smoothly right across the range with less vibration and a rich vein of torque all the way. Coupled with SI-DRIVE, it lets you choose from 3 engine operation modes.

SUBARU BOXER 2.5-litre SOHC engine

Given its 4 cylinders but 2.5-litre capacity, this engine combines the capability for sporting driving with lightweight. A high performance intake manifold and Electronic Throttle Control System mean smooth revving to maximum power with a responsiveness that will lift your soul - delivering more output and fuel economy at the same time. Its relatively lightweight and low-down mounting give ample reserves of power and torque, for a truly agile driving feel.
